DESCRIPTION:Half-Earth Day® 2023 will focus on how we can link information to action\, fostering a conversation on how we can use the best available science to support communities in their understanding and stewardship of biodiversity\, and empower stakeholders to ensure truly successful conservation outcomes. \nHalf-Earth Day brings together people from around the world and across disciplines to share their unique perspectives on how to achieve the goal of Half-Earth and ensure the health of the planet for future generations. \nThis year\, Half-Earth Day is part of the annual GEO BON Global Conference\, which is focused on the grand challenge of “Monitoring Biodiversity for Action.” We are excited to be returning together to Montreal\, where governments from around the world convened last year at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP-15) to reach agreement on goals to guide global action to halt and reverse the loss of nature.

SUMMARY:Protecting Half of Earth for All Life with Dr. Dennis Liu
DESCRIPTION:Join Northeast Wilderness Trust virtually for a talk with special guest Dennis Liu\, PhD; watch from the comfort of your own home and participate in a Q&A discussion. \nThe goal for global conservation is Half\, inspired by E.O. Wilson’s call to protect half of our precious planet for the rest of nature. Although the “America the Beautiful” campaign\, the US implementation of 30 x 30\, is a good start\, it will not be enough to reverse the current extinction crisis and bring humanity into the safe zone. At this time\, the US currently has about 15% of its land under formal protection for biodiversity\, which matches the global percentage. The Half-Earth Project’s goal of 50% is not reachable in the US through state and federal action alone. It must include conservation by non-profits\, NGOs\, and individuals—including the forever-wild lands Northeast Wilderness Trust protects. Half-Earth’s goal is to leave no species behind. Dennis Liu\, PhD will feature stories of charismatic creatures like hummingbirds and dragonflies\, and discuss how protecting one species often benefits others. He’ll also talk about what each of us can do as individuals and as communities to support all of the miraculous species we love and need.
