SUMMARY:Paula Ehrlich and Dennis Liu at "The Power of Design: Designing Climate Futures" Forum
DESCRIPTION:Paula J. Ehrlich\, President & CEO of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation\, and Dennis Liu\, Vice President of Education of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation\, will speak at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Morningside Academy for Design annual Forum\, The Power of Design\, dedicated this year to “Designing Climate Futures.” This convening is an opportunity to discover design responses to the current climate and ecological crisis. \nThe Forum aims to show how how design addresses the climate emergency by helping to produce new ecological\, spatial\, and social conditions rather than mere technical fixes. The Forum brings together a group of designers who are proposing diverse and highly transformative approaches to the climate crisis\, spanning from the local to the planetary scale\, and offers a platform to know their work and learn\, through workshops\, with them. \nDennis Liu will be leading a Preserving workshop as part of a Designing Climate Futures session from 3:30–4:30 pm. \nPaula J. Ehrlich will be speaking as part of the Forum from 5:00–6:45 pm. \nThe event will take place at the MIT Welcome Center and Innovation Headquarters\, located at 292 Main Street Cambridge. \nThe Forum event will also be livestreamed for the larger MIT and global communities. The livestream can be accessed from the Morningside website design.mit.edu or from the livestream site (The Power of Design). \nSPEAKERS\nAlphabetically ordered \n• Benjamin Bratton is the director of the Antykera Program at the Breakthrough Institute and former director of the Terra-Forming program at Strelka Institute. Bratton’s current work focuses on the potential of planetary computation to tackle planetary scale problems. \n• Paula J. Ehrlich is the President & CEO of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. She is the co-founder of the Half-Earth Project and has led the development of the Half-Earth Project Map. \n• Ayr Muir is the founder of Clover Food Lab\, a vegetarian restaurant chain that works with local providers to reduce the CO2 footprint of the food industry. \n• Céline Semaan is a designer focusing on climate and environmental activism. She is the founder of Slow Factory and the Slow Factory Labs\, two initiatives addressing climate justice and human rights through cultural change\, science\, and design.

SUMMARY:Half-Earth Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Half-Earth Day® 2023 will focus on how we can link information to action\, fostering a conversation on how we can use the best available science to support communities in their understanding and stewardship of biodiversity\, and empower stakeholders to ensure truly successful conservation outcomes. \nHalf-Earth Day brings together people from around the world and across disciplines to share their unique perspectives on how to achieve the goal of Half-Earth and ensure the health of the planet for future generations. \nThis year\, Half-Earth Day is part of the annual GEO BON Global Conference\, which is focused on the grand challenge of “Monitoring Biodiversity for Action.” We are excited to be returning together to Montreal\, where governments from around the world convened last year at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP-15) to reach agreement on goals to guide global action to halt and reverse the loss of nature.

SUMMARY:Protecting Half of Earth for All Life with Dr. Dennis Liu
DESCRIPTION:Join Northeast Wilderness Trust virtually for a talk with special guest Dennis Liu\, PhD; watch from the comfort of your own home and participate in a Q&A discussion. \nThe goal for global conservation is Half\, inspired by E.O. Wilson’s call to protect half of our precious planet for the rest of nature. Although the “America the Beautiful” campaign\, the US implementation of 30 x 30\, is a good start\, it will not be enough to reverse the current extinction crisis and bring humanity into the safe zone. At this time\, the US currently has about 15% of its land under formal protection for biodiversity\, which matches the global percentage. The Half-Earth Project’s goal of 50% is not reachable in the US through state and federal action alone. It must include conservation by non-profits\, NGOs\, and individuals—including the forever-wild lands Northeast Wilderness Trust protects. Half-Earth’s goal is to leave no species behind. Dennis Liu\, PhD will feature stories of charismatic creatures like hummingbirds and dragonflies\, and discuss how protecting one species often benefits others. He’ll also talk about what each of us can do as individuals and as communities to support all of the miraculous species we love and need.
